I am amazed at the many negative and/or lackluster reviews of this movie. Ronan was great as the main character, as long as we recognize that Lady Bird is an uncertain teenager, not the fountain of all wisdom. In addition, her boyfriend in the movie (Kyle) is kind of an immature pretentious jerk (see: Zinn, hand-rolled cigarettes, prom, et cetera). The relationship between Lady Bird and her mother was well-performed, even if the communication is frustrating. I think some reviewers might have missed the point about Sacramento (or anyone's hometown, for that matter): you may want to escape, but it'll still be part of your heart. Let's call this movie: 4 out of 5 stars.

Like others have mentioned, this movie was definitely overrated, following a rebellious high school girl who has arguments/problems with her family (mostly her mom). She goes through things and learns lessons from mistakes that most of us have probably made at one point or another. I enjoyed it mainly because of the likeable cast, but not the story-line.

My friend and I couldn't watch more than 15 minutes of this movie.
I found young girl obnoxious, with useless, cliche parents.
Really was looking forward to seeing it, what with the hype prior to the Academy Awards.

On of the major subplots in Lady Bird - a movie that is nothing but subplots - is the cliche story in which a teenage girl sacrifices an established friendship in pursuit of popularity, only to ultimately realize her mistake. Incredibly, this is one of the few things in the film that feel lazy or inauthentic. The result is a coming-of-age story that is genuinely heartfelt, genuinely affecting, and genuinely surprising.

I found this to be pretty underwhelming, I felt like I've seen this sort of thing before but done better in other films. A nice effort from Greta Gerwhig on her first feature but I'd have to say it was a swing and a miss.

This one really hit home for me. I thought it was terrific.

Not a comedy! Should be shown to all juniors in high school. This was really real BUT not a comedy. Factual. Fascinating. Yes, some of us have mom's like that.

First of all Saoirse Ronan is suberb and is carving out a very nice career. Secondly, this is another film that gives audiences a bait and switch when it comes to theatrical trailers and hype. The movie was sold as a comedy with the funniest scenes (Ronan jumping out of a car) shown in trailers. The movie is a comedy, just not a slapstick comedy, but instead a young adult flick that reads like a Judy Blume novel. Not that it is bad, just not as advertised, hence all the negative reviews. This movie is purportedly based on director Greta Gerwig's experiences as a misunderstood teen. Ladybird is funny because seen with cynical adult eyes we know that for all of Lady Bird's attempts to explore her creativity, leave her humdrum town and rage against her mother, she will conform, get a job and become one of the middle class. This ironic bit of laughing at ourselves through Lady Bird and thinking of all the ways we tried to be different when we were young is what generates the humor. Not a great film, but not horrid either if you see it as a coming of age teen melodrama.

Lady Bird, as she prefers to be called, is a very turbulent teenage girl who is ready to apply for colleges. She is free-spirited and will go against everything that her mother says, even though she loves her. Her mother on the other hand, is doing her best to keep the family afloat after her husband loses his job and she becomes the sole provider for the household. Raising children is not easy, yet this movie showcases the mother-daughter relationship in a very honest and loveable way. I would rate this coming of age film 4.5/5 stars and recommend it to anyone who has someone like Lady Bird in their life. @The_Reviewer of the Teen Review Board of the Hamilton Public Library

Overrated, and disappointing considering it was nominated for several Oscars. I watched it because of the nominations. A self-centered teenager with working class parents, evolved during the movie into a self-center high school graduate. While Sacramento can be a dull town, I lived there once, it deserved better than the constant condescension it received in this movie. Borrow something else.

Many inquiring and humorous quotes have been posted in IMDb. Many thanks to the contributors. The first quote listed in the site hits the spot on the relationship between many teens and their parents (added three lines* for full context):
Lady Bird: I wish that you liked me.*
Marion: Of course I love you.*
Lady Bird: But do you like me?*
(Conversation continued as the first quote in IMDb page)
Marion: I want you to be the very best version of yourself that you can be.
Lady Bird: What if this is the best version?
