The eight season moves into the 1970s, with DCI George Gently facing retirement. In the opening episode Gently discovers the victim's wife was convicted of the murder eight years ago, he decides to re-open the case; a controversial move. But DI Bacchus opposes Gently's decision, not least because he worked as a DS on the original investigation and putting mentor and protégé at complete odds.

I was surprised when I saw this in the catalog - they were still making George Gently episodes! The DVD container says "the final episodes" and George will not be coming back. The two 90 minutes episodes cover contemporary problems in a northern England police department. It is now 1970 (most of the men have groovy sideburns!) That was one element I really liked about the show--it was set in the 1960s; there is no modern technology (computers, cellphones etc.) but a dedicated police officer who was a WWII veteran who believes in truth, honesty, justice and integrity. He takes on a younger, local officer who needs police training and basically a father figure as his personal life becomes unraveled in changing times. Episode 1 has George and Bacchus involved in an older case where the police corruption surfaces and Bacchus' older shoddy police work comes to light. It involves a case of an old murder and the wife who has been imprisoned for years, but George reopens it looking for clarity. Women's rights and the treatment of women have always been a topic on the show. Episode 2 focuses on political corruption and the interaction of those practices on police work. It also provides some answers for George about why and who killed his wife. Overall a great series - Martin Shaw is fantastic as George Gently and Lee Ingleby is great as as the young Bacchus. Nice to see the series come to an end; not happily but with some answers to issues outstanding in the series. Good conclusion for the series, if you have not seen the George Gently series start at the beginning to see the evolution of the characters and of the evolution of the time period.
