The Golden Triangle is synonymous with the drug trade. Not only is it one of the largest drug-manfacturing regions of the world, it is a lawless land as it sits at the intersection of Myanmar, Laos and Thailand. Two Chinese commercial vessels are ambushed while traveling down the Mekong River in the waters of the Golden Triangle. 13 sailors are executed at gunpoint and 900,000 meth pills are recovered at the scene. This brutal massacre sets the scene for the tragedy that's about to unfold. The Chinese government immediately reacts by sending a band of elite narcotics officers, led by captain Gao Gang (Zhang Hanyu), to the Golden Triangle to uncover the truth and find the mastermind behind the murders. Tea field owner and Golden Triangle-based intelligence officer Fang Xinwu (Eddie Peng) also joins the investigation, discovering that the seized drugs were planted there by the henchman of a notorious drug cartel named Naw Khar. This videodisc is listed as Region 3. I can personally verify it will not play in most dvd players in the USA.

Action packed but the story feels lacking.

Action packed police-crime drama that seemed to have captured faithfully an international incident known as the "Mekong River massacre." Filmed in Beijing, Yunnan, Penang and Thailand with non-stop gun battles, car chases, ka-booms, drug traffic violence and daring police missions. A bit overloaded by the number of characters and stunts but a good watch as a "based-on-true-story" thriller.

Per wiki:
According to the crew of a different boat who witnessed the attack, about eight gunmen stormed the Chinese cargo ships Hua Ping and Yu Xing 8 in the morning of 5 October 2011. The hijacking reportedly occurred in Burmese waters. Later during the day Thai river police in the northernmost Chiang Rai Province recovered the ships after a gunfight, and found about 900,000 amphetamine pills worth more than US$3 million. The bodies of the Chinese crew members were later retrieved from the river. They had been shot or stabbed, and some had been bound or blindfolded. ... After a long manhunt involving Chinese and Thai authorities, in late April 2012 Lao security forces captured Naw Kham (Naw Khar) in Bokeo Province and extradited him to China ...

He's hiding out in the mountains of the Golden Triangle Special Region. It sits at the intersecting point of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. It's under the three countries' jurisdiction, but its location makes law enforcement almost impossible. Adding corruption into the equation, the region is a "No Man's Land", a paradise for criminals.

Drug abuse is a plague. It spreads across our nation, harming our citizens. Drugs are synonymous with the Golden Triangle. Myanmar and Laos, this "No Man's Land" has long been safe heaven for criminals and drug dealers. The emergence of new drugs has lowered the threshold of production and solidified the reputation of the Golden Triangle as a drug empire. At 4,180 km, the Mekong River is an important link between our nation and Southeast Asia. It's also the ideal route for drugs to enter our nation from the Golden Triangle. It is known as the "Hell's Gate of the South."
