The Wood, written by Chelsea Bobulski has a beautiful cover that immediately drew me in, and I did not regret the read. The plot was captivating and held my attention very well, so much so that I completely sped through the book. The ideas and fantasy realm are unique and original. The story is centred around the young teenage protagonist, Winter Parish, who is the guardian of ‘the wood’ after the mysterious disappearance of her father, the previous guardian. The wood is a dangerous threshold between times, with travelers accidentally stumbling upon it from different periods in history, and it being Winter’s duty to escort them back to their proper place. When a strange boy, knowing far too much about the wood, appears around the same time that the wood is poisoned, they embark together to find the truth of the matter. I really enjoyed how the author told the story from both the present and the past, managing to weave both perspectives together to tell a complete story. Reading about both younger and older Winter also helped show her development as a character. I didn’t enjoy as much the ending. While I know it makes sense for the book to end that way, I felt that it was left very open-ended, leaving a lot to the imagination. Don’t let that fact discourage you from reading, because it is still very worthwhile. I would strongly recommend this book to someone who wants a good read with a nice blend of adventure, mystery, fantasy and a splash of romance.
