Man, those expecting a biopic about the 5th century Roman emperor will be disappointed! This Constatnine is a demon hunter, ably played by Keanu Reeves in the role he called "profitable." Based on a comic called "Hellblazer" (Apparently they changed the title to avoid confusion with "Hellboy."), this is pretty entertaining, pretty silly supernatural action movie. Reeves is trying to get into heaven and so he, like, sends a bunch of demons back to hell. Calling it "theologically highly suspect" (see below) is pretty hilarious, as I don't think anyone involved cared much about theology. Rachel Weisz plays a cop whose twin sister has died, Tilda Swinton is the angel Gabriel, Gavin Rossdale of Bush (and Gwen's ex) is a dapper demon, Shia LaBeouf is Shia LaBeouf, and Peter Stormare is the Devil. The CGI is a little fake looking, but some of the monsters, especially the ones made of insects, are cool. Constantine totally owns that "Angels & Demons" guy. You might also like "Legion" and "End of Days." Director Francis Lawrence would go on to do "I am Legend" and some of the "Hunger Games" films. They also made a TV show out of this.

Rated 4/10.

Just read the comic (Hellblazer). Seriously, it's much better than this trash.

The character has been completely neutered and Americanized (for some reason). Chas has been reduced to a know-nothing kid played by the annoying LeBoof (who personally destroyed Indy 4) or however you spell his name. Gone are the lords of Hell (except a late cameo appearance that makes no sense due to there being zero world building of his domain. He's the lord of ash-world?) or any semblance of actual spiritual world structure, now it's just a random wasteland with guest appearances by the Resident Evil's Lickers.

John Constantine is such a rich, complex personality, with many layers, nuances and quirks. So, of course Hollywood hired an actor with zero range or emotional depth to portray him. Typical.

The only positive thing I have to say is they did a great job with casting Hounsou as Papa Midnite. He's a non-factor in the comic, only appearing for a few issues and dying like a chump. Djimon brings a malevolent gravitas to the role that is greatly appreciated and sorely lacking in the rest of the film.

Yep - Saw it again. Better this time even. I Like Reeves a little more than some years back & it "smokes" pretty good considering its a decade old! Original..... The Mexico car scene... kewl... badaboom!

Theologically highly suspect. Lots of gruesome stuff.

OUCH!! That's the sound of Constantine and HOMETHEATER!! This movie has some very good sounds as well as characters that helped me make up my mind to add this to my collection. My friend talked a lot while watching this movie with me. Often using four letter words during some of the action scenes. We both liked the way one characters looked and sound. There is a scene where Mr. Reeves meets this creature made up of insects while fighting it on the street. The sound of the insects seperating as a whole and then forming back as the creature had my surrounds buzzing with sound. And my friend saying Oh S - -T!! That was very nice effects. I also liked the kid who finds a part of the spear. When he's hit by a vehicle my friend jumped out of her seat. But this movie has quite a few scenes that are very good for visuals too. I'm giving this movie 4 stars. For very good visual and audio effects, cool looking creatures and demons, cool story, and having my friend curse up a storm. Pepperidge Farm's "Tahiti" cookies, sweet potato pie, whipped cream, and a chocolate and vanilla icecream shake.

I liked this movie. It has some high sparkage actors and the story is interesting, but it has a very dark, dismal take on the afterlife. And I don't like that they somehow made the Archangel Gabriel a "bad guy". He's an angel! AND a major one at that! His first and only allegiance would be to God's will, not to his own petty agenda. It just seemed wrong.

I really enjoyed this movie. I'm not a big Keanu Reeves fan, but he was a great choice to play the title character. The rest of the cast was well-chosen, too. The action was well-paced and held my attention throughout. I found it interesting from a religious perspective, too. I'm not Catholic, but I thought it an interesting take on some of the Catholic beliefs.

Angela Dodson: I guess God has a plan for all of us.
John Constantine: God's a kid with an ant farm, lady. He's not planning anything.

John Constantine: Angels and Demons can't cross over onto our plane. So, instead we get what I call half-breeds. The influence peddlers. They can only whisper in our ears. But a single word can give you courage, or turn your favorite pleasure into your worst nightmare. Those with the demon's touch like those part angel, living alongside us. They call it the balance. I call it hypocritical bullshit.
