In the middle of a snowstorm in Brooklyn, 60-year-old human rights scholar Richard Bowmaster hits the car of Evelyn Ortega, a young, undocumented immigrant from Guatemala. What at first seems just a small inconvenience takes a far more serious turn when Evelyn turns up at the professor's house seeking help. At a loss, the professor asks his tenant Lucia Maraz, a 62-year-old lecturer from Chile, for her advice. These three very different people are brought together in a story that moves from present-day Brooklyn to Guatemala in the recent past to 1970s Chile and Brazil, sparking the beginning of a long overdue love story between Richard and Lucia.

I am a fan of Allende and the background of life in South America is relevant to the news of our time but other parts of the story wandered into areas that seemed disconnected.

I loved the three main characters and their stories but the overall story about how they came together was pretty lame.
It's still worth reading but not Allende's best.

I've not read many Allende books, this one had me laughing out loud in the first chapter before the full impact of the stories hit me. Set aside the tale of how the three main characters come together. This is such a truth telling story so few of us in the US will ever come close to hearing, let alone understanding.

How many of our ancestors left Europe, often driven by necessity, certainly lead by a bunch of white guys & 250 years later we have problems and we are so blessed. I did not feel I was being lectured, just enlightened.

A minor traffic accident turns into a convoluted farcical attempt to hide a dead body. Along with the silliness, is a very sobering retelling of three lives, A native of Chile shares her story of growing up under dictatorship, an illegal Guatemalan girl tells her nightmare of a life and a college professor shares his former life of loss and alcoholism. This is perhaps one of my most favorite Allende books.

I love most everything this author writes. I waited for this book a long time in line, but was very disappointed. The story line was so predictable and slow, that I did not even finish the book.

A highly improbable present day tale of innocent bystanders enacting a murder coverup that becomes quite understandable and even reasonable within a framework of significant cultural and historical perspectives.

I have really loved some of her novels but in this one the plot was just ridiculous. She is at her best in describing Central and South American cultures but that did not make up for the completely unbelievable and ludicrous plot that stitched the background stories together.

Engaging and reads well. The title itself has many layers to it. I also appreciated the fact that the author bring to this story important issues relevant to today still.

The thread that weaved the three main characters together was a brief episode when Richard collides with Evelyn's car holding a dead body in the trunk. Add Richard's upstairs tenant Lucia and we have the three main characters. I love Allende's writing. This story was more of attrocities of corrupt government, survival, smuggling coyotes, and families torn apart than about the dead body. The murder twist could have been a more compelling reason to reach the end.

This latest book from Isabel Allende is a great read. The point of view alternates between the three main characters who are from varied backgrounds. The plot thickens with a murder mystery and a romance, all by a writer of amazing talent. Don't miss it!
