Salma Hayek and John C. Reilly are Queen and King in this gory, gorgeous grown-up fairytale full of princes and princesses, sorcerers and fairies, and fearsome monsters and ogres. Three story strands interweave with one another in this film from director Matteo Garrone. In one tale, Hayek plays a jealous queen who forfeits her husband's life. Some very vivid characters, imaginative set designs and fine costumes, but the choppy and jerky editing ruins the continuity. Fun, but hardly memorable.

Brilliant! Stories written ages ago can be seen in a contemporary light. A message for people in all stages of life. Never hold back your sons, pick your own partner, never crave being young, be careful what you lust after, don't think you know what is best for another, and know what too value. The scenes are breath taking and the costumes exquisite. The acting wonderful. A real message for people of today. A movie teens should watch.

It wont have broad appeal, but the costumes and the locations/ sets are lush and other worldly. A little long for my tastes, but interesting take on three stories written centuries ago.

This epic movie falls into the ‘must see” category. It is so different and the acting is so good that it would be a shame to miss. Caution: it is not for the prudish. That said, one can enjoy a very well done blend of three fairy tales involving three kings, and a menagerie of monsters, strange beasts and magical happenings. Well beyond what Hollywood could produce.

The Story telling is nearly non-existent. Not worth watching at all.

Pointless, and an absolute waste of time!

Imaginative fairy tales for adults with unseemly tastes. Relentless scenes of shocking and absurd bizarre royal wickedness, duplicity and obsessions, but all within the realm of fairy tales. The only reality were the Lees brothers. Filmed in gorgeous medieval Italian locations. Well worth a watch for pure entertainment.

It's not for everyone, as others have said. But this film is beautiful, colorful, and ultimately not about Happily Ever After so much as Be Careful What You Wish For. A queen wants a child. A princess wants marriage. A king wants his lusts fulfilled. And a child wants a companion, a monster finds a bride, and magic makes someone young and beautiful. How it all combines is the film's weakness, since the end leaves everyone, including this viewer, dissatisfied. But I wasn't sure if I wanted more or I wanted neat conclusions. I really think I wanted more.

The costumes and settings are amazingly lavish and are stars as much as the actors. Anyone waiting for more Game of Thrones can get some sex and violence and magic here. Again, it's not for everyone. But if you want dark fairy tales, this is a great way to scratch that itch.

Birth is always stained by death. And death, in turn, is simply one element of birth
and not even the most dramatic one. ... You want a child? Every new life calls for a life to be lost. The equilibrium of the world must be maintained.
Who sings with such a beautiful voice? Where have you been hiding all this time?
... Don't hide! Stay out in the sunlight. Please, stay out to warm your cold king. Oh I see! So you want to play hard to get. Well, so be it. I have fought many wars in my time. And even the most impregnable fortress surrenders at last.
Before long you will be old enough to be married and then you will depart these walls forever.
-Well... If that is indeed the case, then find me a husband.
A husband? What sort of husband would you like?
-Well... I'd like my husband to be courageous and strong and... handsome.
I'm sure such a man exists, but until we find him, please, do not agitate yourself over a future none of us can predict. ...
