After 23 years working as a devoted maid in an upper class Chilean household, embittered and ailing Raquel (Sundance Film Festival and Gotham Award winner Catalina Saavedra) can no longer care for the family alone. Trapped by guilt, matriarch Pilar (Claudia Celed̤n) refuses to let Raquel go, even though it is clear their longtime maid is slowly unraveling. Instead, Pilar hires more help, throwing Raquel into a jealous frenzy. The seemingly happy home soon becomes the stage for Raquel's dirty tricks as she attempts to drive away anyone who threatens to take her place with darkly comedic, and in the end, endearing results.

Dour-faced and glum, Raquel has been the maid for Mundo Pilar and his wife for over 20 years; long enough to raise their children and become acquainted with everyone’s little secrets and idiosyncrasies. You could say she’s become a family fixture...of course when push comes to shove her place in the hierarchy of things is made quite clear. But when Mrs. Pilar decides to take on a second maid to help with the chores Raquel’s crueler streak finds ample opportunities to assert itself as she harasses each new recruit until they quit in frustration; until the Pilar’s hire Lucy. Raquel’s opposite in almost every way, Lucy’s ebullient nature and warm heart soon break through the older maid’s cold exterior to reveal an unexpected vulnerability... I suppose one could see The Maid as a subtle critique of class relations in Latin America, or the struggle within the lower classes themselves as Raquel takes a few snide swipes at the first maid’s Peruvian heritage. While I certainly can’t disagree with those observations, this is first and foremost a beautifully realized tale of one woman’s personal growth delivered with sly candour and more than few gentle smiles. The Brady Bunch was never like this.

The main character is so mean and nasty it is really hard to want her to succeed. Overall a pointless movie that is a waste of time.

You won't believe the lengths to which this maid goes to hold her job.
Her reasons are equally shocking.

This movie was heartwarming in the end - not what the cover would lead you to expect.

Very nicely done little film. I could even follow the South American Spanish, as the actors don't speak too rapidly. The story is actually based on Sebastian Silva's family maid in Santiago, Chile.

When the 40 something maid begins to have difficulty keeping up with the workload, the mother decides to hire a second maid to help her. Which the maid takes as threatening her position, so she sabotages the first two candidates; locking them out of the house and turning on the vacuum so she can't hear them beating on the doors and windows. Until a woman who is stronger willed than she arrives. Since she can't defeat her, they become friends.

In an interview I've heard with the Canadian Eleanor Wachtel--available on the internet, search for 'Aftershock, Chile in Transition'--Silva says that when he showed the completed film to the two real life women, the one who is the main character quit and made a better life for herself.

I did not care for the cinema verite look, but I liked it. The acting was great, particularly Catarina Saavedra, who was both sympathetic and frightening.
