I stopped watching this once his love interest (Katrin) asked him to a rave, then treated him viciously. Unclear why he'd be interested in her after that. Too bad, because the mix of cultures might have been interesting.

Alright, I realize that this film's enjoyment will be limited to those people who are willing and able to follow along with subtitles and half the dialogue being in a foreign language. A pity, too, because it's a worthwhile film. Interesting to see Craig Robinson in a dramatic role.

Don't judge this film by its cover. It looks like a stupid comedy, but it's actually more of a drama and has subtitles throughout. Fans of independent films may like this movie. Those who prefer blockbusters should probably avoid it. Morris, age 13, tries to assimilate to life in Germany, including learning the language. Markees Christmas is great as Morris, and I thought the scenes with his father, played by Craig Robinson, and/or his tutor, played by Carla Juri, were excellent. A lot of the movie is Morris trying to connect with other teens, and I did not enjoy those scenes as much. His one "friend"/crush is pretty unlikable. The music in the film, which is mostly rap, is good. Some of the dialogue is in English; the rest is German and subtitled. I thought the subtitles were difficult to read--too small, a little too fast and they often blended in with the scene in the background. Morris from America is rated R for teen drug use and partying, sexual material, brief nudity and language throughout.

Thirteen year-old Morris and his father, African-Americans, move to Germany after their mother/wife dies and Morris has to accommodate to living in a strange environment at the crucial time of changing from a child to an adolescent. The story is filmed in both English and German with several actors phonetically speaking some of their lines. You can tell only if you are a language expert. The only bilingual actor is Morris's German language tutor.

English subtitles for German conversations are almost impossible to read.
