"The story of Count Alexander Rostov who is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the count is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel's doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him a doorway into a much larger world of emotional discovery. Brimming with humor, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this singular novel casts a spell as it relates the count's endeavor to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose."-- Page 4 of cover.

Charming story with wonderful descriptions. I often felt like I was right "there" with the characters. Beautiful cadence made ebbs and flows of activity poetic.

The best book I have read in a long, long time. Just beautiful! While I savored every word, I am a bit conflicted about the ending. Five+ stars.

In the end, I enjoyed this book despite finding it fairly slow moving - especially at the beginning when the Count manages to maintain a pretty lavish lifestyle despite being displaced into a tiny upstairs room at the luxurious Metropol hotel. I suspect in real life he would have been banished to some place much less cushy and much more cold. For that reason, I had to work fairly hard at suspending my disbelief to continue with this book. I did, though, enjoy reading about the enduring friendships he formed over the years.

I was sad to finish reading A Gentleman in Moscow. You become so fond of the character. Towles' writing is thoughtful, literate, philosophical, humorous even suspenseful! Now I have to read his first book.

I just finished this and my heart is too full to write a review. I just want to sit and enjoy it.

This book has it all. A delightfully likeable protagonist, historical information, interesting secondary characters, humor (in abundance) and pathos. Highly recommended.

This delightful book is imbued with the manners, grace, and elegant turns of phrase from a century ago in a recently post-tsarist Russia. “Having acknowledged that a man must master his circumstances or otherwise be mastered by them," the former Count makes the best of his house arrest in Moscow's Metropol Hotel while observing the gradual erosion of etiquette and higher learning that were the hallmarks of upper society. But the charming and witty Count is not and never was a snob. He is a kind man who takes a keen interest in all around him and finds new riches in his smaller world, adapting with dignity, good nature, and perspicacity while Russian society changes over the decades. Underlain with wry humour and perceptive observations about life there is a fairy tale quality to this book, which, if it has a moral, is to live in the moment and take pleasure in the many small things that seem ordinary: a shower of falling apple blossoms, the redolence of a saffron-infused bouillabaisse, and moments shared with fellow travellers on life’s journey. Take the time to appreciate a story told in beautiful prose with gentle charm and read this book!
