Under the cover of darkness a small boy, Maki, loosens the shackles that bind him and escapes into the desert night. Pursued by slavers across the moon-lit savanna, Maki meets Zarafa, a baby giraffe, and an orphan, just like him, as well as the nomad Hassan, Prince of the Desert. Hassan takes them to Alexandria for an audience with the Pasha of Egypt, who orders him to deliver the exotic animal as a gift to King Charles of France.

The visuals: beautiful, mostly hand-drawn animation, with lively characters and epic landscapes (some are right out of Lawrence of Arabia).

The story: fanciful, rather banal children’s fare with (almost) talking animals, benevolent pirates, a balloon journey (with a giraffe on board!), a city from the Arabian Nights, and a completely incongruous discussion of Buddhism and reincarnation (in parts of the world where Islam and Roman Catholicism are dominant). Though actual historical events are supposedly buried in the narrative, they’re rather hard to find; and some aspects of the history are whitewashed, particularly colonialism and the existence of slavery in France.

If one ignores these flaws, this film works perfectly well as a fairy-tale. Maybe that’s all it needs to be. And the buffoonish king of France is pretty funny.
