Intricate stories built around the war in England in the late 1940-s. My evening dessert. Great characters and acting.

Wow! A TV series we totally enjoyed.
The stories, complicated and unpredictable, were all interwoven, and in the end - but not until the end - always all wrapped up and the case(s) solved. The actor playing Detective Foyle does an amazing job. Very often he didn't say a word, but we could tell what he was thinking just from his expressions. Other times he delivered gut-punching lines ("I've figured out what you did and how you did it") with a perfectly straight face.
For us it was eye-opening, learning about WWII from the English point of view. There were many thought-provoking topics as various characters consider what would be the best course of action, and experience character-building events in their lives. I love learning something while being entertained.
Other reviews mentioned lack of closed captions; we watch everything with captions (although the actors in this series speak clearly enough for us to understand them better than most with an accent different from our own), and I believe there are now captions on all discs in every season of this series.

I greatly enjoyed this series until towards the ending. Michael Kitchen simply walked through each scene, said the same things in even fewer words. He's so much better than that. Get rid of that overcoat already! Honeysuckle Weeks is so fun to watch & a nice play between the two.

As of 3/30/14 SMPL doesn't have discs 1 and 3 of Season 2. Disc 2 contains Among the Few, a brief production note about filming fighter planes, and filmographies of major cast members. Disc 4 contains The Funk Hole, production notes about the events which inspired this episode, and filmographies of major cast members. Disc 4 is scratched enough to cause the show to freeze at 31 minutes and again at 45 minutes but if you move forward at those points the rest is watchable.
