I'm very glad I read these short stories. Not only did it flesh out Celaena's character for me, it also gave incredible background information, made sense of Celaena's past, and made me love the series even more. I'm not normally one to read prequels, but I enjoyed it and would recommend it if you are interested in getting into the Throne of Glass series.

This is definitely the best book of this series. I recommend it to all lovers of teen fiction, action, adventure and romance. I like this book better than the others for several reasons. One: it does not include that infuriating second-thought magic plot line that quickly became the only plot line in later books. Two: Sam is alive! Every one of the characters in these books annoy me to at least some degree, Sam included. But the only reason I am annoyed with Sam, my favourite character, is because he cares for Celaena. Think about this realistically. Celaena is a terrible person! Not this many people would throw themselves at her! It was five people in this series. Five! Just consider that. I would not recommend the rest of this series.

I appreciate the fact that the five novellas were chronologically ordered to give us a full-length novel. The novellas also lets the reader a quick way to decide whether they'll continue on with the series. Celaena is a chore, plain and simple. You either like her or you learn to tolerate her.

I've often thought of Maas' books as the basic b*tch of all books. You might roll your eyes, hate how mainstream it is, but the guilty pleasure of reading her books satisfies the basic b*tch in all of us.

If you would like an deep and wonderful journey into Celaena's past, this is the book for you! I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves this series as much as I do.

I loved this book but it is SO SAD! Arobynn is MUCH more cruel and evil than you think, and is apparently very good at acting. I love these stories except for the last one. Like seriously, WHY Sam? And the ending is horrible. The only thing that cheered me up was that I knew what happened in the future because of Throne of Glass and the rest of the books, but I was still so sad.

I read all the other comments and I was like "oh it can't be THAT bad" but let me tell you I cried for a solid 3 minutes after finishing the book. If you liked Throne of Glass you will have no trouble finishing this book in a few hours, like I did! I literally couldn't stop reading. It was as if I was walking down the street and every corner I turned there was a new occasion, something that pulled me in so that I kept going. Celaena is a little more vain and selfish than she might seem in the main series, but she's still badass nonetheless! And Sam, of course...oh, Sam. If you like adventure, mystery, and a little bit of romance, I highly recommend reading this book!

Totally loved this book!!! Heartbreaking at the end but looking forward to the Throne of Glass. Yes...I'm a prequel reader.....Caelaena is one of those heroines you wait for and are the characters you cheer on from the sidelines. Not the goody gumdrops. They're on the other side. The bad guys that mean well 😏 anyway if you like this book I definitely recommend Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, talk about bad guys.😆

This was a very interesting view of who Celaena was before the Throne of Glass book and it was awesome to see who Sam Cortland was and let's just say HE'S AMAZING!!! This is well worth the read if you want an extra look into the incredible life of Celaena Sardothian!

This was so painful to read because I could see everything that leads up to *spoiler if you have not read the series*

Sam's deathh auahghghghgh You can see how every single decision leads up to what happens, and it is absolutely heartbreaking. I think this should be read before the series, but if you change up the order it's not that big of a deal. You can always read the prequel and then reread the series (that's what I am doing) because I feel like now I would get more out of the series.

If you read the prequel first, Celaena might start to annoy you because of her arrogance and vanity, but trust me she is so much better in the series. This arrogance is part of her "before" character, so I know why Maas added it in to such great lengths.

As I got nearer and nearer to the end, because I had already read the main series, I could see their downfall which was why it was so hard to read (but in a good way). Go read it!!

Five novellas featuring Adarlan's most feared assassin, Celaena Sardothien. Plan, conquer, achieve, and cry - pretty much the way Celaena lives throughout the book. She's been betrayed countless times over, but by whom? That is the mystery she must solve again and again as the people she's grown to love are taken away from her. As the other comment suggests, a backstory of the main series.
