Yes, the teens are trying to save their school clubhouse, but it would be doing this film a disservice if nothing else were to be said about the relationships between the characters living in post-war Japan, which is where From Up On Poppy Hill truly shines. The dynamic between the two leads, while it doesn't send your heart racing, is lovely in its slow and gentle progression. Even the introduction of what I think is the main issue (as opposed to the demolition of the clubhouse), which I won't spoil here, is presented quietly and dealt with by the characters in much the same way. It is a slow film overall, without any particular spikes as far as action goes, so do keep in mind that if you're looking for a fast-paced movie, this is most likely not it for you (right now).

Pretty weak on the tear jerk scale for a Ghibli Studios flick.

Rather unmagical compared to what I've come to expect from Studio Ghibli. It's probably unfair to compare Goro Miyazaki's work with his father's, but the similarities bring such comparisons to the forefront. It wasn't bad, but nothing about it really stood out to me. I barely remember the story or the characters.

And it needed a cat or two.

Studio Ghibli has done it once again. They have made a beautiful and memorable movie that has touched the hearts of many.

This movie was beyond amazing. The art was great, the characters were charming and the story was outstanding.

5 star movie all the way!

By far the best Studio Ghibli film. It was so moving and beautiful while comedic and happy at the same time. YOU NEED TO WATCH IT :D

I enjoyed watching this movie, and the art is flawless all the time. Character development could've been better, but for an hour and a half hour movie, director did a good job of placing all necessary elements in this film. The plot was very straight forward like many of other films made by Studio Ghibli. Overall, it was a soothing movie.

A deeply touching and sweet film about growing up in a changing Japan. A subtle movie that deals with the problems of progress and the dilemmas of leaving tradition behind. It is a Studio Ghibli film, which is the same as saying that it is brilliantly animated. This is done in a traditional style of animation and not the more popular computer animation. The voice acting is superb and the film a treat. A slice of life tale unlike most other Studio Ghibli's films but a treat nonetheless for fans of animation or good storytelling.
