A Marine sergeant stationed overseas falls in love with a woman only through correspondence. On the train back home, he meets a beautiful young doctor who's starting a new practice in the same small town. Once in town, he finds his pen pal's place of residence, but to his surprise he only finds the girl's mother living at the old mansion with her servant - the old woman informs him that her daughter has gone away and will return shortly, but asks him to stay at the mansion until her return.

“Strangers in the Night,” is described as the first film noir directed by the great American director Anthony Mann. It is a class B movie, quite good where the young Mann would start to gain experience with shadows, angles, and various methods of creating mystery, suspense, evil , psychosis, and tension. This is a previously unavailable film recently distributed by Olive films. It is truly worth your time (56 minutes) to see the early work of a great director. Mann would go on to make great Western noirs with James Stewart, in which he transformed straight westerns to Westerns with complex and dark themes.
