When a notorious millionaire banker hangs himself, his death attracts no sympathy. But the legacy of a lifetime of selfishness is widespread, and the carnage most acute among those he ought to be protecting: his family. Meanwhile, in a wealthy suburb of Glasgow, a young woman is found savagely murdered. The community is stunned by what appears to be a vicious, random attack. When Detective Inspector Alex Morrow, heavily pregnant with twins, is called in to investigate, she soon discovers that a tangled web of lies lurks behind the murder. It's a web that will spiral through Alex's own home, the local community, and ultimately right back to a swinging rope, hundreds of miles away.

This is a rough book. For example, every character is described in some negative way. The crime is brutal. The perpetrators very disturbed. A condemnation of rich parents.

Very slow and bizarre start. Hard to get into the book. Eventually we get use to the pace (slow). The end is not very well resolved. It's a very unsettling ending. I can't say that I liked it much.

Excellent crime novel. This is my first book by Ms. Mina and I loved it. The author sets this novel in her hometown of Glasgow Scotland and I believe it is the latest in a series.. She constructs very credible characters against a gritty as well as beautiful Scotland.as background. We learn about "The firm" through her matter of fact way of adding interesting insight about Glasgow into the story. The story telling is gripping, seldom lets up and is witty and smart. It is hard to put down. This author can go against the best in the genre and she will not disappoint. Great read

I have lijked her other characters better but Alex Morrow is growing on me. I really love this author and it gives me a definite picture of Glasgow.

Not usually a fan of murder/crime but this was an excellent read. Well written, good story that kept my attention.

This was my first Denise Mina book and I really enjoyed it. So much so that I have placed other titles on hold so I can learn the history of the characters Alex Morrow, her family plus her police colleagues.

Not bad, but not exactly scintillating, either. Read it if you have nothing else to do.
