Youngme Moon's interesting read on differentiation explores that fact that differentiation is more than a tactic, a flashy advertisement, but essentially a way of thinking.
In regards to marketing reports and marketing valuation, Moon states" the moment we choose to measure something, we are essentially choosing to aspire to it. A metric, in other words, creates a pointer in particular direction. Thus the herd phenomenon."
"True differentiation, sustainable differentiation is rarely a function of well-roundedness; it is typically a function of lopsidedness. The same can be said of excellence."

Great analysis of "escaping the conformity of the herd" but a failure to acknowledge that the niche players she heralds do not exercise "exceptional rule"

I highly recommend it anyhow. . . . .
