An examination of the complicated history of the American West, the land, and the peoples. Stephen Ives directs and Ken Burns produces the series, much influenced by Burns' style, following the story from earliest times through to the legacy still with us today. Required viewing for anyone with an interest in the subject, and filled with a mixture of stories and themes that will have differing reactions. Some stories will make you smile. Others are tragic. The cinematography and use of still photography fits the subject, the scholarly commentary has a rich variety, and it's all brought together by the narration of Peter Coyote, an ideal choice for the task.
