Directed, produced and co-written by Curtis Hanson in 1997 based on James Ellroy's 1990 novel of the same name, this American crime drama depicts the intersection of police corruption and Hollywood celebrity in the 1950s.
With twists and turns in a hard-boiled style, this film turns out an engaging and thrilling entertaining piece with excellent performances of a terrific cast.
I enjoyed it to the hilt.

a film noir, but in Cinemascope and colour, testosterone flies all over the place in all kinds of amoral directions, including over the top, but with superb acting throughout, great cinematography, and artful direction

Spicy and boiling-hot, this sensational early-'50s crime drama is a morality play disguised as pulp fiction -- a sprawling saga of corruption and redemption set against a flashy West Coast backdrop.

L.A. Confidential is a movie bull's-eye: noir with an attitude, a thriller packing punches. It gives up its evil secrets with a smile.

Good movie..... Can't understand how Kim B. even got nominated for an Oscar !!?? She has probably less than a page of dialogue; and maybe..... 1/2 hr of screentime. Mediocre performance by a mediocre actress !!! Definitely not an Oscar - worthy performance !!!

Saw this movie ages ago and it stands up well. Great cast and script. You have to pay attention in this movie, lots of stuff going on and lots of names being thrown around. Great movie!

You know the old movie trope about the detective, boxer, or shamus who wants nothing more than to retire to a chicken farm? Well, one of the characters of L. A. Confidential does just that, and I'm not convinced it isn't a bitter joke. The character should have been killed, and the scene in which it is explained he has survived and is chicken farm bound has the mark of a last-minute addition. The film has other flaws, for example, it is overlong, compared to its sleek, 1940s peers. However, it has a dark, hypnotic atmosphere, unlike any film made in the last 70 years, except for Chinatown. If you're looking for an entree into the world of hard core noir, this is a place to start.
