The beginning of the end. After two brilliant albums of punk/new-wave (LOOK SHARP and I'M THE MAN), Jackson tried some stylistic experimentation on the halfway-decent BEAT CRAZY, detoured through Cab Calloway swing for the curious JUMPIN' JIVE, then dived head-first into multi-cultural pop jazz with NIGHT & DAY. "Steppin' Out" is one of his best songs, a well-deserved hit single, but nothing else on the LP matches it ... Jackson hasn't come up with another track that's half as good since then, though he's been trying for 30-plus years ....
