Thriller-writer James Scott Bell adds to the Write Great Fiction line of books with "Plot and Structure". I certainly got a lot from this book, but mostly from the first few chapters. What I benefitted most from was the writing process - getting started - rather than how to build the plot. Bell is obviously a talented writer. However, he clearly doesn't know how to write anything other than thriller. Heck, does anything but horror/thriller/criminal drama exist in the literary world? Bell apparently doesn't think so. Although he occasionally mentions genres like fantasy or romance (what about cozies, young adult, religious?) the tips he provides for building plot and structure simply are not useful when it comes to writing other genres. There was enough winning advice from Bell that I did buy the book - its not the type of advice you read once and remember - but I was disappointed at his redundancy and myopic vision after the first few chapters.
