This guy gives me a literary woody. I think one of the greatest coming of age stories since 'This Boys Life' by Tobias Wolf. I can relate to certain aspects of his growing up and formative years. Makes my top ten in the novel category.

Another thought provoking novel by Bukowski. He was beaten by his father and shunned by most of his age group so I have to wonder how he became such a highly praised writer. He was a violent, drunken man who didn't like or have the time for humanity. As you read his work you can see bits of humour and flashes of social insight. This is certainly a change from the writing usually associated with this genre. I'll read another of his books I guess.

Bukowski tackles his childhood and his abusive father and passive mother in this telling of the events of his early life. Dedicated to all fathers, this book is a hard hitting review of the desperation that plagues American households. A must read for anyone starting a family and of course a must-own for any Bukowski fan.

One of the best novels ever written.

Brutally stark and honest (biography, or fiction?) story of young Harry Chinaski as he grows up through the school system and rebelling against his father, authority, and life in general, and his drinking and fights.
