A lush, extravagant romantic tearjerker which rightly deserved that "Best Costume Design" Oscar and "Best Actor" nominee. Unfortunately the mellifluous French prose is hacked to bits by the English subtitles---they retained its rhymes but destroyed its soul.

A fantastic movie, but it will force any non-francophone to practice their French solidly; To watch this in English is a little bit like watching a play by Shakespeare in French.

A tragic love triangle on a backdrop of noblesse, courage, devotion and sacrifice, it remains a classic, and the "tirade du nez" a monument to artful insult. I have seen this play staged with a great variety of actors, and it tends to bring out the best out of whoever plays it. In this instance here Depardieu is sublime; it's not for nothing he's one of the sacred monsters of French cinema. Fantastic casting overall.

How good is this movie?
I bought a DVD of this movie.
I have watched more than five times.
French is not my mother tongue, the DVD has subtitle but in English, no French version.

To appreciate more the fine dialogs, I bought the French book and read it twice. Couldn't find this book in Ottawa bookstores, my friend in Montreal found and sent a copy to me.

It's a classic French movie depicts an excellent novel. Unfortunately, according to my Google search, the author did write some more novels but not worth reading!!!!

Powerfully tragic and romantic. A much-celebrated film in France. Suitable for a family movie with children EXCEPT for some bloody images in the war during the latter part of the movie.
